A Requiem “as Gentle as I am myself” – Gabriel Faure

The public is invited to attend our Good Friday service on April 10 at 7:30 p.m. in which the choirs of Second Baptist Church and Eliot Chapel are presenting Faure’s Requiem. This piece consists of seven movements, about 40 minutes in length, and will be sung in Latin. Bradley Short will be conducting, and the accompaniment will be provided by organ (Marilyn Short), harp, two French horns, violin, two violas, two cellos, and bass. Emily Heslop will be the soprano soloist, and Leon Burke III from Eliot Chapel will be the baritone soloist.

Background on Faure’s Requiem:
Gabriel Faure (1845-1924) began working on what would become perhaps his best known work in 1887. At the time, there was no stated reason for his working on a Requiem while employed at the prosperous church of the Madeleine in Paris. One only assumes that with the loss of his father in 1885 and then his mother 1887, that his thoughts would naturally turn toward such a work. However, what might not have been expected was the gentle and deeply personal work that emerged over the next several years and finally settled into the much beloved master work that even today moves both singers and listeners alike.
