Excerpts from The New Outlook

Early March 2007

Dinner and a Scavenger Hunt
As a fundraiser for their trip to Green Lake this summer, the youth are inviting everyone to a St. Patrick Day’s dinner and scavenger hunt at the church on Saturday, March 17.

Dinner will be at 5:30. Then at 6:30 the youth will divide us into teams and give us a list of things to look for. Each team will ride together as we drive around looking for the items on our list. When we find one, we’ll take a picture of it. At 8:00, finished or not, we’ll head back to church for dessert while our pictures are printed out. Then come the prizes!

Bring your kids! The youth will provide activities for the little ones back at the church. The cost is $15 for adults and $5 for kids, with a maximum of $40 per family. If you’ve got a digital camera, please bring it--as well as whatever it takes to transfer your pictures to a printer.

What a great way to help out our youth and have fun and fellowship at the same time!

Lenten Series Continues
Fourteen people gathered last Sunday evening in Fellowship Hall to eat together and study Through the Fire, a Lenten Bible study led by Pastor Michael Dixon. Come join us for the remaining four sessions! We gather in Fellowship Hall at 5:00 p.m. for a light supper and begin the program at 5:45, ending by 7:00.

If you’d like a copy of the booklet, contact Rick Hoyt or call the church office. The cost is $5.25. But feel free to come to the series even if you don’t have the booklet. Also, there’s a sign-up sheet on the table in the narthex for bringing soup (or another main dish), salad, dessert, or making the coffee and punch.

See the last Outlook for details of the study. You can find it online by going to our website at www.2ndbc.org and clicking on “Newsletter” and then “Mid February 2007.”

More Special Lenten Events
On Palm Sunday, April 1, we will celebrate Christ’s entry into Jerusalem with a joyous, palm-waving processional.

On Maundy Thursday, April 5, at 7 p.m., we will gather for an ecumenical communion service with our brothers and sisters from Faith Des Peres Presbyterian Church and Samuel United Church of Christ in the Samuel UCC sanctuary.

The Sanctuary of the Beatitudes will be open for silent meditation on Good Friday.

Easter, April 8, brings the joy of celebrating Christ’s resurrection!

Hatching Chicks for Heifer International
During the Lenten season, the children of Second Baptist are bringing in a portion of their own money to help poor
families around the world.  Heifer International works with community groups in impoverished areas to allocate
donated livestock and provide training for the environmentally sound and culturally appropriate care of the animals.
Each recipient of livestock then “passes the gift” on, giving the firstborn of their animals to another waiting family.

The children’s goal is to save up $60, enough for Heifer to provide three flocks of chicks for needy families. Every Sunday
the kids will count the money brought in. For every $1.70 saved, they will “hatch” one of the pom-pom chicks they made
out of its Easter-egg shell.  When all three dozen eggs are hatched, they will have met their goal!

No money is being requested from the adults of the congregation; the children are taking ownership of this service project.
Children are being encouraged to bring a tithe of their allowances.  Parents of children without their own money are
encouraged to make a bargain with their children in which the children can earn money during Lent for giving up
whatever bad habit the parents would like to disappear or for demonstrating whatever good behavior the parents would
like to instill.  In addition to providing children with money they can donate, this would also serve as a daily reminder
of the people they are trying to serve.

Note: The next event for third, fourth, and fifth graders will be March 9, 6 – 8 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church.

Only 5 Tickets Left!
Linda Marks has just 5 tickets left for Second Baptist members and friends to watch the Cardinals play the Kansas City Royals on June 20. She started out with 40 tickets, so they’re going fast. Sign up for yours on the sheet in the narthex.

The tickets are $22 each (regularly $33) for both adults and children, to be paid sometime in April when the tickets
come. The seats are in section 335 of the "Outfield Terrace Reserve Boxes" between first base and the right field foul pole.
Come and root for our World Champion Team!

Work Day Scheduled for March 10th
The next work day is scheduled for March 10th from 9 a.m. until noon.  The primary items for this workday are to continue on the south parking lot landscaping and to do a few small fix-ups and basic cleaning around the church.  For example, the Youth room needs some vinyl baseboard glued in place. Please join us for this worthwhile and necessary work.  Call me at 314-664-2417 if you have questions.

In Living Color!
You can pick up your copy of the new church directory on the table in the narthex. The ones out there last Sunday went fast, but our secretary, Debbie Albu, has printed more, so there should be enough for everyone this Sunday. Many thanks to Debbie for all of her work in putting this together. Look for your picture in living color!

Hear about Diana Pryer's Mission Trip
All adult church school classes will meet together in Fellowship Hall on Sunday, March 11 at 9:30 to hear Diana Pryer tell us about her recent mission trip to Costa Rica. Don’t forget to set your clocks back that day or you’ll miss it!

Praying the Psalms
Beginning March 25, all adult classes will meet together for a 6-week series on praying the Psalms, led by Fred Adams. For thousands of years the Psalms have been used in prayer and worship. We’ll learn why that is and how we can use the Psalms to enhance our own prayer.

Fred recommends that we read Answering God: The Psalms as Tools for Prayer to go along with this series. Books cost $10.40. If you’d like one, contact Mary Shepardson.

Area Meeting in St. Louis March 10
Area V of the Great Rivers Region (Missouri and Greater St. Louis area churches) will have its annual meeting on Saturday, March 10, at Third Baptist Church here in St. Louis. The program runs from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., with the theme Ministry and Mission for Such a Time as This. Rev. Muriel Johnson, our area minister, describes the event this way: “Rev. Dr. Warren Hoffman will preach, the Antioch Baptist Church Music Ministry will be the ministers of music for the day and the Area V churches will be gathered to do a little business, a good measure of equipping and a whole lot of praising the Lord! I can’t tell it all, but let me say, you will not want to miss hearing the Tait family (Gabriel, Ilka, and Devon & Galen), members of Shalom Church City of Peace, share their testimony -- 'Called to Missions.'”

There is also a program for grade-school children. In order to have lunch there, reservations should be made to the Area Office or call our church office by March 3. If you can’t register on time, you are still welcome to attend the event and eat lunch elsewhere in the neighborhood. Limited parking is available at the church, but there are many pay parking lots nearby.

From the Pastor
Even though it’s past the season of Epiphany and into Lent, I’ve been thinking about epiphanies. An epiphany is a moment where God is experienced to be present. Maybe it’s a revelation or insight; sometimes it’s just a sense of presence or a moment of heightened awareness that the Divine is close to us. Greg Bear, a science fiction writer that I enjoy, described in one of his novels a secular scientist, who as a time of crisis approached, realized a sense of being enveloped by a Presence, and that this Presence was all love, no judgment. You may remember the TV series Joan of Arcadia, where God kept appearing to Joan Girardi, a normal teenager, in different human guises—a dog walker, a goth teen, a little girl, an older woman—and giving Joan instructions that would help her see life in a new way.

Epiphanies aren’t always that straightforward or recognizable. Sometimes they come in hunches, when we see a problem that we’ve been struggling with in a new way. Sometimes they come in experiences of awe, when in a dazzling sunset or a starry sky we realize the vastness and beauty of God’s universe. Sometimes they come in disguise as we deal with a difficult person who tests our love and patience, and we realize God’s love and patience for us. The trick is to be aware. Miracles abound, but many times we look right by them and ignore them. God does speak; God does come close. May we have eyes and ears and hearts open to realize it.

Grace and Peace,
Mike
