Excerpts from The New Outlook Early March 2007 Dinner and a Scavenger Hunt Dinner will be at 5:30. Then at 6:30 the youth will divide us into teams and give us a list of things to look for. Each team will ride together as we drive around looking for the items on our list. When we find one, we’ll take a picture of it. At 8:00, finished or not, we’ll head back to church for dessert while our pictures are printed out. Then come the prizes! Bring your kids! The youth will provide activities for the little ones back at the church. The cost is $15 for adults and $5 for kids, with a maximum of $40 per family. If you’ve got a digital camera, please bring it--as well as whatever it takes to transfer your pictures to a printer. What a great way to help out our youth and have fun and fellowship at the same time! Lenten Series Continues If you’d like a copy of the booklet, contact Rick Hoyt or call the church office. The cost is $5.25. But feel free to come to the series even if you don’t have the booklet. Also, there’s a sign-up sheet on the table in the narthex for bringing soup (or another main dish), salad, dessert, or making the coffee and punch. See the last Outlook for details of the study. You can find it online by going to our website at www.2ndbc.org and clicking on “Newsletter” and then “Mid February 2007.” More Special Lenten Events On Maundy Thursday, April 5, at 7 p.m., we will gather for an ecumenical communion service with our brothers and sisters from Faith Des Peres Presbyterian Church and Samuel United Church of Christ in the Samuel UCC sanctuary. The Sanctuary of the Beatitudes will be open for silent meditation on Good Friday. Easter, April 8, brings the joy of celebrating Christ’s resurrection! Hatching Chicks for Heifer International During the Lenten season, the children of Second Baptist are bringing in a portion of their own money to help poor families around the world. Heifer International works with community groups in impoverished areas to allocate donated livestock and provide training for the environmentally sound and culturally appropriate care of the animals. Each recipient of livestock then “passes the gift” on, giving the firstborn of their animals to another waiting family. The children’s goal is to save up $60, enough for Heifer to provide three flocks of chicks for needy families. Every Sunday the kids will count the money brought in. For every $1.70 saved, they will “hatch” one of the pom-pom chicks they made out of its Easter-egg shell. When all three dozen eggs are hatched, they will have met their goal! No money is being requested from the adults of the congregation; the children are taking ownership of this service project. Children are being encouraged to bring a tithe of their allowances. Parents of children without their own money are encouraged to make a bargain with their children in which the children can earn money during Lent for giving up whatever bad habit the parents would like to disappear or for demonstrating whatever good behavior the parents would like to instill. In addition to providing children with money they can donate, this would also serve as a daily reminder of the people they are trying to serve. Shari Nelson-Faulkner Note: The next event for third, fourth, and fifth graders will be March 9, 6 – 8 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church. Only 5 Tickets Left! The tickets are $22 each (regularly $33) for both adults and children, to be paid sometime in April when the tickets come. The seats are in section 335 of the "Outfield Terrace Reserve Boxes" between first base and the right field foul pole. Come and root for our World Champion Team! Work Day Scheduled for March 10th

Praying the Psalms Fred recommends that we read Answering God: The Psalms as Tools for Prayer to go along with this series. Books cost $10.40. If you’d like one, contact Mary Shepardson. Area Meeting in St. Louis March 10 There is also a program for grade-school children. In order to have lunch there, reservations should be made to the Area Office or call our church office by March 3. If you can’t register on time, you are still welcome to attend the event and eat lunch elsewhere in the neighborhood. Limited parking is available at the church, but there are many pay parking lots nearby. From the Pastor Epiphanies aren’t always that straightforward or recognizable. Sometimes they come in hunches, when we see a problem that we’ve been struggling with in a new way. Sometimes they come in experiences of awe, when in a dazzling sunset or a starry sky we realize the vastness and beauty of God’s universe. Sometimes they come in disguise as we deal with a difficult person who tests our love and patience, and we realize God’s love and patience for us. The trick is to be aware. Miracles abound, but many times we look right by them and ignore them. God does speak; God does come close. May we have eyes and ears and hearts open to realize it. Grace and Peace,
